Toronto Water Meters Next City Scandal?

I read with disbelief about Toronto’s plan to implement a high tech water meter program (and 9% annual increase in all water bills until 2012), in the older neighborhoods, in order to help the city deal with an $800 million shortfall in funds required to update the water lines and sewers, but can’t help but question the cost…$150 million program to convert 15,000 homes to these new water meters. By calculation, that works out to $10,000 per home to supply and install one of these new meters. I had a water meter installed in my house in 1993 (in Hamilton), and it cost me about $400 at the time. Mind you, it wasn’t anything high tech, except that it could be read outside the house.
The condition of the water system in Toronto, and other parts of the province for that matter, have been neglected with respect to maintenance and upkeep, and the mounting bills and debts are reminiscent of the old Ontario Hydro debt we all seem to be paying off.
Given the city’s handling of the computer leasing scandal, is this another fiscal disaster waiting to happen? I would hope that the taxpayers of Toronto are preparing to fight this, as there is no way it should cost $10,000 to supply and install a water meter.

I for one don't appreciate paying more for less. The cost of living in Toronto seems to be rising faster than any pay increase I may see in the future. It seems that every few months the city is finding new and creative ways to tax the hell out of us. I don't agree with your comparison of your $400.00 meter install with the city's $10,000.00 supply and install cost. Since this $10,000.00 expense involves the "supply" as well as the install of a meter. the supply involves tearing up streets sidewalks and reinstalling new pipes. That alone would cost you a large chunk of cash. it cost me $1000.00 to run a new pipe from the water main to my house.
The real expense came when I started getting my water bill. I use to pay around $35/month now it's close to $100.00/month. I like to think I am rather conservative with everything, and I was expecting to see a reduction on my water bill, so this was a surprise. I don't water my front or back lawn since I installed eco-lawn grass and the vegetable garden has a low flow watering system. I thought I was conservative with water, but this water meter seems determined to milk every remaining dollar out of me. So the real scam isn't the $10,000.00 per house hold because something tells me the city will make that money back with interest once the meters start milking the masses. Once the new water mains are installed with there lower maintenance costs, they will be swimming in hundreds of liters of our cash.

Looks like another scam by the utility companies and the government to squeeze every last bit of cash from your pocket...don't be fooled by the conservation of water/save the environment bullshit/propaganda.

Not to mention the very harmful radiation waves that will constantly be going through your house and those in it. I heard the electricity smart meters give off radiation blasts which are about 1000 more powerful than cell phones. This smart water meter does the same...

Anyone know if you can legally resist this?

On top of the City, there is also a requirement of many homeowners to upgrade their water service should their service be comprised of lead pipes, or galvanized pipes. This is an added cost to the home owner.

It is not our job to dictate City regulations and approaches but the work must be done regardless once these decisions have been made.

We have performed this service for quite a few people and always try to make it as affordable as possible for this reason.

Do home owners have the right to know how much is being paid to Neptune ( the co. that has the water meter contract) for the installation of these smart meters
I f this is new technology then why is the water meter is being wired to a transmitter in our home or outside? Hard wiring is old tech . In a couple of years that same company will be awarded a contract to upgrade that smart meter to one with a chip inside.

Why not install a water meter with a chip inside to read the volume of water being used.Instead of this hard wire in our finished basement.
